Artist Comment: In 2027, with the birth rate falling uncontrollably, the military decided to step in and seized control of government to save the human race. All women aged in their twenties found to be fertile were required to do four years Compulsory Reproductive Service (CRS) in special breeding centres.
Initially, the military government ruled that all women studying for or holding university degrees were exempted CRS, to lessen the impact on the economy. However, complaints arose that the policy was prejudiced in favour of the middle and upper class women, bringing back unhappy memories of the unfair lottery draft system in the Vietnam War.
Faced with a public backlash, the government lifted the exemption from CRS for women studying for or holding Arts or Humanities degrees.
