North America a decade after the cataclysm was split into two very different societies - the scattered semi-civilised fortified camps, and the wild country between that was the domain of the Sons of Death barbarian clans.
In the fortified camps, concern grew that with so few women left the gene pool might contract rapidly in size in their small and isolated communities. Thus the camps began swapping their women folk every other year, to achieve optimum breeding potential.
In the long-term this resulted in the camps producing future generations of soldiers who outwitted the progressively slower thinking warriors of the Sons of Death on the battlefield.
