After saving Termina. Link had saved the Fierce Deity mask for a special occasion. He returned to Hyrule and attended a special Temple Service overseen by the Princess herself. She had thanked Link for his help, but a thanks and pat on the back were hardly a fitting reward for a hero of his caliber. No, he had the idea for a much more fitting reward. And with that mask he was going to get it!
