Sophy's friend Todd had been falsely accused of crimes by colleagues at the law firm he worked for, and the plan was to sell his dishonest accusers on the Dark Web to buy him a new identity and the funds to start a new life.
However, Sophy knew from her time monitoring the Dark Web for Naval Intelligence that the typical buyers of women on the Dark Web expected the auctions to be streamed from expensive mansions; not the kind of abandoned basement Todd was hiding out in.
The most expensive home in Washington DC that Sophy had ever seen belonged to Senator Nickson, a corrupt politician who used her position as Chair of the Senate arms exports committee to make a fortune receiving bribes (insisting on gold bars) from authoritarian regimes to approve arms exports that would normally be rejected on human rights grounds. Her assistants were deeply involved in this illegal activity, which Sophy had discovered while interning for the Senator when she was a student at Georgeford University.
Sophy saw an opportunity to get both a great venue for Todd's auction, and some extra stock to sell.
