Hubris, the fault of gods and men alike. Artemis thought she could beat any mortal who dared question her title as Goddess of the Hunt, and so came the wager. A mortal man, a runner from the south, a place of no winter, claimed that he could beat the legendary huntress in a footrace across the Greek mountains. Artemis as vain, as ever claimed he would not even pass her so much as once, and so the stakes were made. If the mortal lost he would become a hunting dog to serve as her companion forever. However, if he caught up, he’d be allowed to do whatever he pleased with the virgin goddess. Now she lay pinned to the ground, her legs spread open for the first time in her immortal life about to become just another spoil of war. It's not only heroes who learn lessons in humility.
