this was when japan during ww2 had an island and it was heavily protected. the U.S army sent a aircraft loaded with bombers the bomb the island, but many were caught. they got to eat a last meal, they smoked a last cigarette, closed there eyes and then *SLICE*. that is the story behind this image

Australian soldier Leonard Siffleet and his comrades were captured during the New Guinea campaign by a Papuan tribe allied with the Japanese. The men were "interrogated" (tortured) before being dragged to the beach and beheaded before a crowd of Japanese and Papuans. The infamous photo of Siffleet's last moments were fished from the corpse of the Japanese soldier who took the photo.
