I really wish Japanese artists would stop making mystery faceless shadow men I love almost every thing else about this.

^ pretty sure it's for self-insertion. Just my assumption, but I imagine most people can project their identity onto a featureless, faceless male easier than if it was just some random anime prettyboy.
