It's not cheating since Mario/Peach and Zelda/Link are basically never actually canon couples.

Breath of the Wild makes it abundantly clear that Link and Zelda are a thing. Other than that though, yeah--they have always kept it super ambiguous.

@anon 2 Actually, Breath of the Wild makes it clear Link loved Mipha. He only protected Zelda out of obligation.
