The "X-Wing" starfighter ships are actually Z-96 Headhunters. They were developed by the Empire and reused by the rebellion during Emperor Palpatine's reign.
Those are Z-95 Headhunters, not Z-96. And they were used by the Grand Army of the Republic as early as the second year of the clone war (a little before Umbara), as republic surplus they were indeed however used by the Rebellion as one of their main starfighters alongside the X-Wing due to the X-Wings cost and how few shipments Incom provided steadily compared to just getting squadrons at surplus prices from private entities.
