I think it's that many people, like me, have become apathetic because of their internet porn addictions, causing them to seek out more extreme and extreme kicks of emotion.
For me a prerequisite to fap is to have an emotional bond with the character, person, etc. The fastest way to bond with a character is when that character has strong emotions. And as everybody knows: negative emotions have the highest potential (to persist, to spread, etc.).

Its hard to explain but it has some sorta connection with feeling bad for the person being abused
