Obviously a little weird replying to a year and a half old comment, but it's not hard to get. It kind of depends on the joke, but it all revolves around an unspoken understanding of something many people would probably be familiar with. Since we are on the internet and people love to say racist things, I'll use an example with a joke involving racial stereotypes.

I have an Asian friend, he is pretty cool person and understands I have no ill-will toward him or have any actual assumptions or feelings about him based on his race. I ask him the following question.

"Hey dude? Can you help me with my math homework?, I'm not Asian enough for this."

Everyone in our friend group, including the Asian friend, have a good chuckle.

Let's say someone didn't get it. You would have to explain to them that this is based off of the racial stereotype that all Asians are naturally good at math. Depending on how you word it you could easily come off as kind of racist asshole and suddenly things are less funny.
