Well, it does make sense! Katara is the last Southern Water-bender. It is her duty to breed as much as possible as fast as possible to strengthen the tribe once more. And Sokka is the effective head of the tribe as the only warrior left, and the only male of age to breed her. Besides, for all her privileged attitude it isn't like she has any other use: she manifested as a bender when she was 5; it has been a decade since and she can barely even lift a bubble of water IF she doesn't lose focus.
