RP's and asterisks*
Seriously, why do people use "*" to designate dialogue or physical action?
English as a 2nd, 3rd, nth langusge is no excuse. I am not aware of any culture that uses the asterisk in those ways.
Not a seasoned writer? You don't need to be. Just read a book of ANY grade level, newpaper, magazine, or whatever, and use those as examples of how to write.

In Discord, the asterisk turns text into italic text, and I believe in most other places too.
It's easier to read that way. Sure, you can also use a fat font, but that doesn't go easy on the eyes either. So instead, you use italic text to describe actions and no other formatting to "speak".

Hence people use Asterisk here, as it equates to italic text.

If you have that much of a problem with asterisks, tell your RP partner not to use them, or tell them to put their actions in an italic tag or something.

Asterisks are perfectly fine with people who want to keep normal text as speech without the use of speech quotes. And if my partner in a certain RP wants to use no asterisks and speech marks that’s perfectly fine, so is using asterisks.

The real answer we need to look for is how many strikes of the return key should it be when replying, and the answer is two. Not one, and not just typing after the /quote] box.

I wholeheartedly agree. If you just hit it once, the text becomes a wall while replying.

It's always bugged me that we can't use italics in most electronic and online platforms.

I don't recall if any of the people I rp with use that. I use "text here" (quotation marks) for when I speak in a rp and (text here.) or <text here.> for actions. Though if you don't like them using that then tell them. Communication in a rp is key.

Oh, I do. Twice, they called me a grammar Nazi and left.

Good, then let them be stubborn. If it really bothers you, you shouldn't need to compromise.

I thought the reason why people use asteriks to denote physical actions was because that's how stage plays denoted physical actions in scripts. I guess it just spread out from there and somehow found its way to chatrooms and the like.

I remember when I was just a wee bab doing cringe rps of my favorite cartoons on forums that's how everyone else separated action from dialogue. I used to do it too before I started getting better at roleplay.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with it. If that's how my partner likes to rp then that's fine with me. As long as I can understand them and they can really paint a sexy picture with their words.

Now, one-line replies? Don't get me fucking started.

I'm a grammar hall monitor at best, maybe private security guard.

Once, the reply I got in an RP session was:
"I suck your dick."
That's it.

I'm personally fine with whatever my partner throws at me.
I'll take one-liners or even one-worders if you're lazy, it's fine, i'll love you anyway.

Yeah only Satan worshippers do that. I don't know how many times I've spent time setting up a scenario and then after my paragraph length starter I get a one sentence reply. Like... this ain't it, chief.

So I was replying to say that today I learned something. But then I realized that I hit return twice when replying already, because that's how you make a page-break you savages.

Are there really people who don't understand basic paragraph formatting to that degree? Call me Neo, because I've apparently been dodging bullets.

Yeah it's a shame you can't do regular italic text.
