Simply put, it's an acquired taste. For me, some does taste good, some doesn't. I definitely agree that it's dumb to drink stuff you don't like at all. But there's plenty I do like. I love various cocktails and liqueurs, and I definitely have preferences for hard liquor too - mostly bourbons and Irish whiskies and decent vodkas tbh.
When it comes to drinking things that are just plain gross, the only point is to have fun with it - getting smashed with friends over nasty tequila shots can be very enjoyable. Simple as that.
