It was mediocre. The story was bland and told a really tonedeaf depiction of slavery. There were SO many plot holes. And the ending was so stupid and cliche, the same ending they've had in every FF since 12 (15 was *supposed* to have the "Gods Bad!" ending trope, but the real ending got cancelled).
The gameplay was alright, but the lack of ability variety meant that the same tactics worked on all opponents and I was just doing the same thing over and over. Not to mention that only those few enemies with a will gauge actually posed a threat, 90% of the combat was spent fighting harmless cannon fodder enemies.
Honestly made me regret trusting Squeenix so readily when I should have known better.
If I had to give the game a rating based on my experience I'd say that I'd give FFXVI an 8 out of 10. However, sometimes the the game feels like a 7/10 game and rarely even going to the 6/10 game territory.
While the story kept me interested, I can't deny that that there are some plot holes and story oddities that left me scratching my head.
The combat is enjoyable and it does open up steadily as you progress through the game. The actions are snappy and and I had rarely even moments when the camera freaked out. I also appreciate the synergy that abilities share. However, the game is too EASY! I'm talking like Kingdom Hearts 2 Standard difficulty easy. I would literally go into grandiose boss fights and notice that I barely had to use my potions. The late game bosses, however, felt challenging and some of the hunts were challenging.
The shopping mechanics in this game are awful. There's so many times when you find a merchants around the world....and they have nothing to offer.
The game looks great and is really well optimized. Plus, I think the soundtrack is strong. The large scale Eikon battles were also really well crafted and made me think that this feels next gen.
