Apparently some group of hackers has started a DDoS attack on Archive of our own, and said at first it'd be for 24 hours but now want 30K in bitcoin. It's been down since Monday, and it kinda sucks. Ao3 is crowdsourced, so there's no way they can afford to pay off a ransom, and they should know that. It's claimed that the hack is done by Anonymous Sudan for religious reasons, but everyone involved who isn't Anonymous Sudan says they're full of shit and not even from Sudan.

So, that's a quick update on that, thought it'd be nice to let people know that in case they were interested in why Ao3 is down.

Yeah, fanfiction, general stories, all that. It's not a super big deal, but that just makes it stranger that it's getting attacked.

I mean, it's a DDoS attack, they're just overloading the servers with traffic, so it's not a permanent thing, and the people at Ao3 are working on getting everything sorted.
