Older Macs are quite durable and you're usually safe buying one used. The original 15" CRT iMacs are cheap, plentiful, and a good convergence point for OS-9 (I think they originally shipped with OS 7.6 or maybe OS-8) compatibility and the ability to use modern USB keyboards instead of the older proprietary stuff. If it makes the startup sound but gives no picture, it probably just needs a new PRAM battery. They use the battery that looks like half an AA, and it's not exactly fun replacing it, however it will last a long time once it's in.
