Are random crits Fair & Balanced™ in TF2?

Random Critical hits have no place in a game that requires aim to succeed. There is a reason TF2 is pretty much the only FPS game to have them.
I’m sure all 5 of the people who still play TF2 on a regular basis are outraged, as well as all 5,000,000 bots.

Fair, yes. Balanced, no. Everyone has an equal chance of getting screwed by it. But the fact remains getting screwed by it shouldn't be a thing to begin with.

Random crits are fun. Hot take here. If you don’t like it, play competitive.

Tbh they are fun, just plenty goofy, though then there’s how the random Crit chance actually increases with damage output. That sucks for sure, makes the Scott Skullcutter stupid asf

They suck ass for sure, yeah. That being said, I feel there would be a *couple* rebalancing changes needed to be made if they got removed today. I feel weapons like the scottsman's skull cutter might need a small buff and the market gardener need a small nerf if all random crits got taken out, for starters.

spy players when their entire gimmick is invalidated because melee has the highest chance of random critting and instakilling

Melee weapons critting often is sorta balanced since (outside of demoknight and trolldiers) you won't bring out your melee often
i.e.: Medics and Engies critting is understandable since they'll always use their weapon as a last resort.

But splash weapons critting is kinda bs outside of kritzkieg medics
Because man I loooooove seeing a soldier clear a control point out of sheer luck.

it allows for those Rare High Moments™ which can only be good with no negative effects

It’s As balanced as a gay person is straight. That’s all I have to say.

I love random crits in TF2. Honestly one of the best parts of the game. I think - and this is a REALLY big think, not based on any evidence - that whether or not you're okay with random crits depends on your perspective coming in to the game.

If your perspective is: "I want to play a competitive class based game in which skill, knowledge, and teamwork are the only determining factors for who succeeds," then random crits don't seem to make any sense.

If your perspective is: "I want to play a funny cartoon shooter where funny cartoon men shoot funny cartoon guns at each other and lots of funny cartoon antics happen constantly" then I would argue random crits are not just okay, but actually required.

The issue arises that TF2 is half of each at the same time and it's really difficult to force it to be just one of those without significant alterations. Therefor, people who approach the game who enjoy both perspectives on their own merit usually have the most fun over a long period of time.

insta crits are fun, are they balanced? Fuck no, but they’re funny, and that’s all that matters.

Valve have to have had thought they belonged in the balance of the game somehow, because weapons like the Backburner, and Half-Zatoichi cannot random crit, it's added as a intentional downside.
