Meaning of some tags
I feel that this post may be necessary to discuss the meaning of some tags so that these tags are not deleted without reason. There are some tags that I don't understand the few that come to mind currently are numbered:

1. ???

2. :o

3. what

I don't know if someone is simply just adding nonsensical tags to mess with the system or not. I suppose the tag :o could be an artist, as artists have unusual names like that some times.

If these are determined to be useless tags that someone added just to mess with rule34, how would we go about deleting them? would we have to go to each image and delete the tags manually? or would a moderator be able to use the "tags" feature and delete the tag from all the pictures tagged with it in one swoop?

I know :o is a facial expression, and what is typically used when a picture makes so little sense as to deserve it, but that first one I don't see the point of.

???'s are sometime the result of character encoding problems, which usually happen when people tag stuff with a different charset than ANSI. The result also often takes appearances such as : ひるみ4妖精 2異種姦1芋虫

Some tags may be personal marks, or someone tagged something that makes complete sense to them, but unfortunately, no one else. If something makes no sense, I'd just ignore it.

Well, you see that's kind of a problem as it's not adding anything useful to the website and in turn is only adding to clutter.

Well, I would much rather have people doing that, than not tagging at all, which is the REAL problem of this site. Clutter in the tags isn't really a problem, as long they aren't deceptive, like saying female when the pics only of a male. THAT would be a problem. Giving multiple true descriptions of the pic isn't a problem. I don't care if they describe 200 different aspects of it. As long as they are all true. As for personal tags or tags that only make sense to one person, they aren't a problem as long as they are not "false" tags that are not truthful or they are misleading. Tags aren't there to admire, they are there to help blacklists and to search with. I use them to also get more information on a pic I like, for better searches of same.

The REAL problem is not having tags on a pic. You can't blacklist them, and you can't search for them.

Well yes I agree that's a problem, but clutter makes the site less user friendly as well. They are both problems.

Two of them are (fairly) legitimate tags and ??? is only on about 130 images regardless. The fact that there's well over 450k images with tagme is a significant problem; images having too many tags or 'clutter' is irrelevant by comparison.

That's pretty much an unfair comparison, as clutter refers to more than one tag, I'm sure I could find 100s of them. Which add up. I don't really care if other people don't see it as a problem or not I still intend to work on both problems, I'm only asking help identifying unnecessary tags.

Going through the tagme search a lot of these "tagme" pictures just aren't having the "tagme" tag removed... they already have 5 tags but no one is removing "tagme"

I really would rather you not remove any tags (unless their just false) guy. Some of us have worked pretty hard to put them there. They're not there to be "pretty". They're there for searches and blacklistings. And some may not make sense to you, but they do to our blacklists and searchs. One of mine is "questionable". I put that in pics that are on the edge of loli so I don't have to see them again. I can't decide if they are or not, so I leave it to others whether they want to call it loli and remove said pic. This lets me put it in my blacklist, and then I don't have to see it again. The tags you sited on your first post are somewhat rare but have meaning to somebody ( probably their blacklist ). Weird and gross come to mind as other blacklist tags that are probably in that category. And those are in my blacklist too.

Just because YOU don't like something, doesn't mean it should be removed. If it's on a number of pics, someone meant for it to be there. And some people on this site are into some really specialized fetishes, like "feathers". So, you may not see why anyone would want to put that tag on a picture, but a handful of people on the board are going to be pretty upset if you remove their tag. The only reason you should remove a tag is if its false. Like "pig", but the pic has no pig in it. We don't need to be removing tags, we need to be making them. If you think some are referring to the same thing ( like bondage and bdsm are really the same thing. I'm into that, and I really see no difference between the two ) then you should request that an alias be made for the two. But in the end, we should not be removing tags unless they're just dead wrong.

Edit: And after looking at the "what" ":O" and "???" tagged pics, I can see why they got them. Those are most likely blacklist tags. Some people didn't want to see those again.

In the end, I think what you are wanting to do is make "aliases". Like :O, ???, and "what" , which all obviously mean the same thing, could all be called just ???. To do that, you need to submit them to the aliases page, so they will be approved by a mod. Don't delete tags that you don't know the meaning of. Someone put them there for a reason. I'm sure if you search for the tag, you will probably get the jist of it by looking at what the pics in that tag group represent. And in the end, a weird tag probably is just someones blacklist tag which should be left alone. If you think it should be changed for some reason, stick it up on the forum so people can talk about it.

Ok, you're getting really hostile here over nothing. I haven't deleted any tags and I've been doing aliases. the point of this thread was to discuss tags I didn't know the meaning of.

Ahegao??
What does ahegao mean?? looking through the pics tagged "ahegao" I'm not finding many similarities many of them look pregnant but others don't look pregnant at all, so I am unsure if that would be an alias.
I'm unfamiliar with the term.
Could it be an artist?

The taglist has it marked as general but then again most artists and characters are also marked as "general" so I need some help on this one to find an alias or categorize it as an artist or character or keep general.

LOL! Found it!

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ahe%20Gao

Don't ask me whoever thought this one up, I've never heard of it. But it shows that just because we don't understand the meaning of a tag, doesn't mean some other person or group doesn't. A good example of a "special" fetish. As for being hostile, you wipe my tags, and you'll hear hostile.
