Eight years on from the cataclysm, North America was divided between the small fortified camps that had been established by the surviving military personnel, and "the wildlands" that was controlled by the many clans of the Sons of Death warrior confederation.
Among the Sons of Death clans, status was measured by the number of stock found in their women's corrals. So important became this comparison of stock that rival Clans frequently tipped into conflict, and raided each other's female corrals; rustling stock no matter what the price in lost warriors.
In the economics of Post-Apocalypse America, five lost warriors was considered easily an acceptable price for one 'perfectly formed' head of female stock.
