After being apprehended for infiltrating Beacon, Cinder and Emerald were offered two choices: jail or community service. They chose the latter, hoping to get off easy, but instead they were marked with tattoos that stopped their semblances and forced to wear maid outfits. While Emerald is oddly accepting of her new role, Cinder still rages at the humiliation she faces on a daily basis.
