Tooru here ready to explain on how the CCA (Comics Code Authority) creatively killed comic books. In the 1950s a moral panic was perpetuated by a psychology novel called Seduction of the Innocent, this book and the scare that they caused violence would lead to the Code being formed based off Hollywood's infamous Hays Code. So how did this kill comics creatively? While the code itself did not sufficiently control comics or publishers, many distributors refused to sell comics without the seal of approval as such many comic books that defied these rules either had to suck up, publish independently or give up in general. The rules were very strict like not giving criminals sympathetic backgrounds, good was to triumph over evil and the most ridiculous one no mentions of "terror" or "horror" (I am not joking). And many companies primarily Marvel and DC at the time found it easier to make family friendly versions of their characters rather than go through the hassle of making new ones, this is also why there was a big boom of superhero comics, the craze was still there but it was also cause it was a lot safer to make it rather than do something risky like MAD and I think Phantom? But as time moved on the code became less and less popular and was eventually discontinued in the 21st century, though its legacy still remains for what it did to comics, not all companies followed it, but it definitely did leave a heavy dent in the industry's creative side for a while, which only recently they've been sorta making up for it.
