To respond to YerLocalSlave, it actually depends, if I'm not mistaken!
TL;DR, Hypnosis is just making someone so focused that they respond subconsciously to suggestions, and are more likely to agree. The pendulum is just what's used to make them focus in some cases.
The pendulum isn't what's doing the hypnosis in reality, it's more just there to direct the focus of the hypnotee towards something while the hypnotist does the work. Hypnosis in reality is like putting someone in a super duper ultra version of being focused, or a trance, and the way it works is that you get someone so focused that their subconscious handles what they do and don't do, aka making them "suggestible," or more likely to agree to something as long as they aren't against the idea or they don't want it.
