The internal damage (tearing of the gastro-intestinal tissues, bleeding, etc) kills the woman. We can't see how much tentacle goes in, but the average length of the small intestines alone is about 30 ft, so assuming the tentacle goes the minimum distance, well, it has to do some damage.
