^i think it's stated in the manga that it's not lethal, it's just inklings and octolings are terrible swimmers

UltimateShiverFan33, the manga isn't considered canon. Also i think the games give the explanation somewhere that it's because their biology basically makes them explode in too much water. They can still drink it, and probably also bathe to a degree, but ultimately their skin is too fragile or something.
