As far as I know, Medusa actually is a very pretty woman who (I think) was raped because of how beautiful she was, and in response one of the gods gave her the ability she now has.

she got raped by a god (i thing it was posaidon not sure about wich god it was) in Athenes tempel was a Serving Maid there as Punishmend that she broke the sacred of the tempel Athene transformt her into that so no other man will be able to look at her again. After a while Athene send out perseus to kill Medusa there the story got seperadet soem say it was pityness and athene was still angry some say it was some strange form of redemption or grace. no Mater what it was Athene put Medusas Head on her Shild as weapon or as reminding or as honor like i said diferent intrepretations.1.
