Yes, there's a problem with tracing, especially when the outcome is absolutely terrible. References are fine, but at least try.

^And if the "outcome" is not terrible, but good as in this case? I think you underestimate the element of tracing in all work on this site. The difference is a poor choice of coloring in this one. Also should probably have the tag "edit".

This isn't good and the coloring is the least of this picture's problems. The real issue with tracing is that when you use it as a crutch and don't have any iota of understanding of the shapes, then the outcome is disjointed and not at all like the source material.
