The trolls had been rampaging across the countryside. So a few of the villager slaves were being used to lure them out of the caves at night, and to keep them there, so they'd still be out of the cave when the sun rose, transforming them into nothing more terrifying than a stone statue. If they survived the ordeal, they'd be freed.
