I understand posting these as video clips when there's sound but is there an advantage to these over gifs? Smaller file size?

there is literally every reason to use webm over gif

Except webm, unlike a gif, isn't a file you can just save onto your computer. It's html based.

The only real downside to .webm's is that they don't work on most mobiles currently.

Unfortunately not all gets the option to 'save video as...'

The huge issue with webm is that it is not created to be accessible to all, leaving many, including me, out of the fun.

Even though gifs take some time to load and bigger file size and no sound, at least they're widely accessible.
