let me be more clear about that. if you mean Birdo the birdo then its female but if you mean a member of the birdo species then it can be either.

Actually to be clear the original Birdo was discribed in the instruction manual for super mario bros 2 as being a male that thinks he is a girl, though the character is now considered to be gender indeterminate. Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe both call Birdo a girl though.
