Actually, the tails on mice are almost exclusively for balance. While not initially apparent, as they typically crawl around on all fours, it becomes blatantly obvious when they stand on their hindlegs -usually in order to better smell something or jump (they're great jumpers). When they do stand on their hindlegs, their tails will typically straighten out and raise up from the ground, allowing it to safely move its otherwise too-heavy torso without the risk of falling over.
