As long as they don't obsess over things I'm happy with this change as it makes sense in the lore as there's no reason it can't happen and it also means I can simp for female custodes ~

^Personally, I don't really care myself as I'm more of a Warhammer Fantasy guy, but it does feel a little lazy as instead of expanding on the Sisters of Silence, who are more or less the Female equivalent of the Custodes, GW just made female Custodes canon and called it a day. But, of course, reactionary/anti-Woke people have to act like such a minor issue is an End Times-level controversy. There is also the much bigger problem of how GW is discontinuing perfectly good models for sale in Age of Sigmar and might embrace anti-consume FOMO-style releases in the future, but I digress.

^I think people are more pissed about how they responded to one guy with the equivalent of "Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia".
No one likes a retcon like this so far into somethings lifetime. At least the Necron retcon made them interesting characters, but I fail to see how a custodes with no cock makes said custodes better written

Why now? Why make the change now? Just because of the new codex? They literally just finished the horus heresy novel series, wouldn't it be better to introduce the fact that there are female custodes then, instead of just reinforcing that they are a brotherhood?

ToomuchAI, you do have point there with retcons as I have experienced annoying and unnecessary retcons from being a long-time Marvel Comics fan, and GW also recently did another dumb retcon in Fantasy saying that Tzaangors never had beaks in Fantasy and only in Age of Sigmar, something that is clearly contradicted by old art of them.
Honestly, the thing that just annoys me the most is the Anti-Woke grifters taking advantage of this controversy to interject themselves into Warhammer (something that they ironically constantly accuse other people of doing) and make the situation worse. For example, the Youtuber Critical Drinker, who has NEVER talked about Warhammer before, still made sure to make a video about the Custodes situation. Personally, I think this video by Bricky, who actually plays the game and regularly makes videos on Warhammer, has mostly good takes (I do disagree with some stuff in it) on the situation. He points out that this was very much poorly handled by GW, but it's no big deal at the end of the day: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pBJb_OjxEI
IAMCOWMAN, you also have a good point about the concept of brotherhood being key to their concept, though I personally feel a bit more concerned about the sense of brotherhood being maintained among Space Marines (since they are warrior monks in space) than the Custodes.

Glad that most of the people here have the same thoughts as me. In the end it's an irrelevant change that's being blown way, way out of proportion. I guess you could look at it as them differentiating the custodes a bit more? That, since custodes originate from noble terran families, that it would be both the sons and daughters? But in the end it doesn't much matter. Did GW handle it well? Absolutely not but I can't imagine a good way they could have handled it. If they made it a semi-big-ish reveal of some random book I imagine many of these anti-woke people would run in and shout that GW is joining in the whole 'perfect female characters who lack flaws' like Captain Marvel or so on. I think the best way GW should have done this is say that female custodes weren't always a thing but became a thing 'recently' with 'recently' meaning hundreds of years from present warhammer since warhammer is one of those sort of franchises. Say... the awakening of guilliman? They could have made it so that when Guilliman came back and gave the custodes a more active role he also made it so they started recruiting noble daughters so that the custodes could grow in number a tiny bit quicker. It's an event far enough away that it could basically be forever but also recent enough that it shouldn't class with many lore issues and any minor lore issues it would clash with could be explained by people not learning of the small change. Claiming they've always been around means they can't use that explanation for small lore contradictions. But in the end I'm mostly happy with the change, differentiates them from space marines a bit more, but not massively so as again it's an irrelevant small thing and that's how most of these gender things should be, an irrelevant small thing where people can give a thumbs up before moving on.

The thing about the 40k fanbase is that the extreme loud minority are the ones who make a big hubbub about this kind of change. The overwhelming majority really either doesnt care much, or is entirely indifferent. Ultimately it changes next to nothing except for the pronouns being used and is an excuse to make semi-canonical porn lmao.

I forgot to mention that the character in itself is actually just stupid. The bestest, sneakiest custodes that planned to TELEPORT A BOMB INTO THE THRONE ROOM. You'd think fucking ANYONE would have done that if it was possible. Then, when a loyal servant of the Emperor leaks this plan, he's turned into a servitor by this petty piece of shit

^I haven't read the story myself, but Bricky mentioned in the video I linked that the Custodes were making semi-mock plans to assassinate the Emperor so they could better improve security for the throne room. Lots of prevention and safety plans (and many ideas in general) can seem obvious and common sense in hindsight, but they often are only come about through lots of testing, unorthodox ideas, etc. People do testing like that on other stuff too, such as shooting bullets at bullet-proof vests to see what they can handle, for example. In any case, the throne room is now safe from bombs being teleported into it thanks to the Custodes idea.
