It is definitely better than 2/3 of Fates and has overall a better story and characters.
I still recommend you play at least conquest if you can find it for cheap.
I haven't played any of the modern FE games. They look very interesting though.

So you're more of a GBA-DS era games? In the Fire Emblem subreddit it's known that Radiant Dawn is considered the best game of the series.
I fell in love with Conquest's gameplay and replay value, even though the story is shit.
Echoes has amazing presentation but poor replay value.
