During the 1850's France invaded Mexico in hopes of establishing a colony near the US thinking of invading it some near time in the future, but somehow the mexican army managed to beat the french dudes before stepping foot on the US.
This holiday gained significant relevance for chicanos (people born in the USA with mexican heritage) during the late 50's and some time of the 60's (correct me if I'm wrong pls) as a pride movement to combat racism. "Hey gringo, we're part of your people too".
In Mexico it isn't THAT important.
