I should have clariffied. 5 though a quarter sized hole. Also .22 can go through a quarter. They are relativly soft metal.

Scarves are how I started. You don't need to measure anything, just knit short rows until you decide it's the right length. And simple alternations in knit and pearl stiches create some lovely patterns.
The biggest probably was a blanket... the most interesting was I guess a stuffed bear for my niece. I don't usually knit such shaped items like that.
