(Do we already have a Royal Guard and a COmmander for it? If not, would it possible for them to be foreign mercenaries like the Byzantine Varangian Guard (Vikings guarding the Eastern Roman Emperor)? I ask, because I'd like to fill that role.)

The Royal Guard of Bacchus is divided in three branches: The Royal Guardsmen, that enforce he Queen's Peace in the lands by all means necessary, the Royal Legions, that pose as the Queen's army and defend the kingdom against invaders and insurrection, and the famous Staalfjar Guard, that protect he Queen and the Throne personally.

Royal Guardsmen:
The Royal Guardsmen are lightly armed and armored, often only gambesons with mail and simple steel helmets, paired wih spears, shortswords, and in some cases crossbows. Their morale is questionable, and heir training by far not the best in the kingdom, but they make up for this through sheer numbers alone.

Royal Legions:
The Royal Legionaries wear plate armor and full helmets. Their armament consists of Spears, bastard swords, heavy rectangular shields and an assortment of crossbows, warhammers for special regiments as well as lances for cavalry. Among them are also large units of longbowmen, ready to defend walls and forts with a rain of arrows, or to support their Legionary comrades in larger engagements. They are, while corrupt, still highly competent and are fiercely loyal to the Queen.

Staalfjar:
The 'Queensguard' or the Staalfjar Guard does not have its roots in Bacchus, but rather from the kingdom of Norska in the far north. Picked from the local chieftan's armies, the tall and strong Northmen undergo rigorous training, get outfitted with the best weapons Norskan Blacksmiths can craft, and march South to Bacchus.
While the Northmen are mercenaries, they have a strict code of honor, they would never break a contract, unless they would be forced to fight against their kinsmen, and are loyal to their contractors.
How and why they guard the Queen is unknown, but if asked, the Staalfjar only respond with 'Old Debt'.
Their armament consists of the long Dane Axes, steel bastard swords and large, round wooden shields. This shields find use in a Norskan battle tactic known as 'Skaldeborg' or Shield-Wall, which the Staalfjar have come to use often, be it against enemy warriors, or a revolting civilian population.
The Staalfjar are always eager and ready to fight, and do not fear death. As they say, their god Morkai takes heir souls to the halls of their ancestors upon death, where they meet a never ending life of feasting, drinking and fighting, while being served by the Valkyries.
Their current Commander is Bjorn Gjukarsson, a veteran of many battles, despite his young age.
