Why censor?
Why do so may Japanese pics end up censored? If you're going to go through the effort of drawing a sexual pic or animating a 3D file, why pixel out all the good stuff?

This. The artists don't willingly choose to obscure their work after spending the time to put it in, they're forced to.

Seriously? That's both vague and indicative, thanks Chronus, but there are still plenty examples that survive the trip across the States. Not nearly ENOUGH examples, but some.

You'd think that if we could illegally download movies through Sweden, we could find an end-around past Japanese laws.

Illegal downloads? Naughty naughty.

Many artists circumvent the laws by using distribution channels unaffected by those laws and falsifying their details so the authorities don't trace them back to Japan. Some just move out of Japan.

I'm willing to bet these artist do have original uncensored copies of their works stored somewhere (likely their home computer) but obtaining them won't be easy (or possible if they've already deleted them).

Ironically, there's western artists that tell you to go to their Pixiv accounts for something that wouldn't be allowed to post on DA.

Go to a Japanese art site for uncensored porn.

That's actually because deviantart doesn't allow porn, however it allows artistic nudes.

Only the western artists' artwork is uncensored though, the japanese artists are still obligated to censor theirs.

Strictly speaking, nudity itself isn't pornographic so DA's decision to allow nudity while disallowing porn does make some sense.

I'm well aware, I just find it amusing that's the direction you point someone to avoid censoring. A place where most the artists there don't a choice but to.

Now I suppose this is irrelevant due to the amount of time it took to post.

From Wikipedia:

Due to the current interpretation of Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan, which forbids distributing "indecent" materials, it is believed that most pornography in Japan must be at least partially censored. The primary means is to put a digital "mozaiku" (mosaic) over genitalia. There have, however, been very few arrests for violations of this law.

The most recent trial based on this law, the first in 20 years, was the conviction of Suwa Yuuji in January 2004 for his hentai manga Misshitsu. He was originally fined 500,000 yen(About 4,900USD) and avoided jail time by pleading guilty. When he appealed the case to the Supreme Court of Japan on arguments that the manga was not as indecent and explicit as much material on the Internet and that Article 175 violated the Japanese Constitution's protection of freedom of expression, the Court upheld the ruling and the fine was tripled to 1.5 million yen.

After Yuuji's conviction, a number of bookstores and chains removed their adults-only section. Their motivation has been attributed to the outcome, in a "chilling effect".

On the July 2013, the three staff members from the Core Magazine were arrested for having their manga almost censored. He pleaded guilty later in December 2013. As a result of the arrest, numerous artists and publishers began to have more self-censorship in attempt to avoid the obsenity charge led by police.
