Futanari Didn't have balls
I finally remembered my old manga account. (90s-2010) What I noticed was a lot of futanari doujins didn't have balls. It was literally just a woman with a dick.

When did most artist start adding balls. Was it the middle of the 2010s like I think?

The oldest image on this site doesn't even have the futa with balls.

You may be correct but futa with balls are simply hotter

I imagine its just a natural evolution of the concept. There was bound to be *some* point where someone would start drawing them with balls, and it just snowballed from there. Personally i prefer balls myself.

Yeah! Initially the term refered to a mix-and-match configuration of junk, and futas with a dick and a vagina or a dick and nothing else were the norm. That's how you get "male futa" to mean a masculine body with any assortment of junk other than dick-and-balls or regular vagina.

"Newhalf" was a hentai term for the dick-and-balls-and-boobs characters that usually get called futas nowdays (and also applied to the "cuntboys" with a regular vagina on a masculine body).

I have no idea when or why the word shifted, futa isn't really my thing so I haven't been keeping track, but it sure did change at some point.

Could have something to do with more normalization of trans girls in pop culture we see in the past 5 or so years (atleast relatively speaking), where generally futas and transgirls have the same audience

Possibly, but since people were already using the term newhalf for trans-like bodies, it's still odd that futa was what shifted. It could just as easily have been that newhalf got popular and the term futa got left behind as the dick-no-balls thing became less common in art.

Language is weird!

Yeah, it never really made the jump into English the same way futa (and other terms like bara, yaoi, and bukkake) did. I still see it on Pixiv a lot, but that's about it, and even there (at least for male characters, unsure how it stands for the girls) it seems to be waning in favour of cuntboy and IRL terms for trans men.

Yeah, i only learned about newhalf a few years ago and havent seen anything about it before or since until now, while the futa term i see constantly and have known about since i basically started looking at porn.

I think a lot of people also just didnt know that the term initially meant something specific, making it naturally expand over time from “woman with a pussy and a dick (no balls)” to include “woman with a pussy and a dick and balls” to now (especially more recently) also including “basically just a trans woman (dick and balls + only anus)” because they mightve thought that all of it falls under the term futa. After all, if you ask someone what futanari is usually they just give the short and sweet answer of “a woman with a dick” which can lead to differing interpretations.

I think most ppl just stopped caring, the increasing normalization of trans women definitely adds to it as theres not really that much of a reason to draw futa with both genitals or without balls anymore. Femboys becoming popular probably helped get artists get used to drawing balls and no pussy too. As far as i know theres not like a specific kink for specifically futas without balls so ppl just stopped i guess.

Simply put, it's the furries. Dickgirls (still called "shemales") were a common manifestation in furry art, contrasted with Herms, who have both sexes. In the mid to late 00s these concepts were escaping containment in their original communities and intermixed.
Also, lots of anatomical images of how silly the two sets idea would be.

Oh, that would explain a lot. The hentai thing collided with the furry thing, and shuffled the words for stuff.
Late 2000s is about when I was seeing people on hentai forums arguing about what's a futa vs what's a newhalf, too. So that lines up.

The word "futanari" is Japanese for hermaphrodite, which is a person with a full and fully functional set of both male AND female genitalia: Penis, testicles, vagina, uterus, ovaries, the whole kit & kaboodle.

An artist even took the time to illustrate quite believably how a hermaphrodite's innards might be laid out-
post #6050097

I suspect because pics of futanari are often posed so that you can't tell whether they have a vagina behind their scrotum or not, some artists started intentionally drawing them with a penis and testicles but no vagina.

I've only run across a handful of pics tagged "futanari" in which a character had a penis but no testicles, and those are or should be tagged "futa_sans_balls" in addition to "futanari".
