This is actually a complex question because up until late 2020 I was a porn archivist. Basically (and I mean to really simplify things) I'd contribute to official databases concerning "legit" porn releases, as well as keep hard copies of a multitude of DIY, amateur, animated and so forth material released only online.

Now that THAT is out of the way....

In general most people prefer the porn "they grew up on". Older folks prefer the early porn, so around the time "Deep Throat" came along and the late 60s/70s features.

Others prefer "loops" ; the stuff that was released on 16mm and usually reserved for peepshow booths or personal basement projections.

The 80s and 90s were a different beast although we must "blame" (or praise) Rex Borski for basically creating gonzo porn which is what 99% of porn became after that (and is still to this day).

I found that the younger generations seem to strictly consume "millenium" porn, i.e. porn manufactured post-Y2K, which in general means the DIY amateur stuff (like OnlySpam, sorry Fans) or that Br4zzers and the like.

For me it actually shifts basically anywhere on the spectrum, bepending on the days/weeks. (Reached text maximum)

CONTINUING from my 1st post above:

Example: recently I went into an older "loop" phase as I attempted to find hard copies of some of the rarer stuff out there which was never properly re-released after being masterized/digitalized.

I also went into a later 80s/early 90s "Peter North" phase.

As I write this I am strictly into a 3D animation phase, looking for stuff that is rather specific and trying to get in touch with creators of the material.

I find that about 95% of the legit studio stuff "these days" to be total crap, with the occasional rare spark of refreshing odd bits here and there.

Since the December 2020 crackdown on tube sites, I find that 99% of amateur DIY stuff is crap, but that's due to my specific tastes and personal "wants".

Nah I'm just a regular dude with strange kinks and fetishes and I like to chime in from time to time.

Plus with my XX years documenting and archiving porn, I have been exposed to way too much for any one person, and I tend to retain way too much details about my findings!

Thisis perhaps why this new wave of DIYers are basically turning the idea of porn into a parody of itself. They're taking away the fantasy and "passion" idea and turning it into a clickbait (of sorts), which renders the porn lifeless and totally mechanical/artificial. I mean it obviously works as some OnlySpammers make a living out of it, but when newer "talent" use THAT as a model, things spiral downwards faster than you can whip your dick out of your pants!

Most porn "movies" are just a compilation of scenes that share a general theme/fetish. Some of them have "plots" to tie the scenes together but that's about it

To be fair for the 70s and 80s, laws (and interpretations of said laws) in the US and Canada regarding porn were only relaxed in the 1960s with the Sexual Revolution and there were more uncharted waters with pornography at the time. The reason why the vast majority of films released in the 1970s and 1980s had huge plots was because they wanted people to see it as more than just couples having sex and to not get charged with obscenity. Additionally, many of the people involved in producing pornography in those days had professional training whether from film school or from prior experience in the film industry.


That said, the more I watch of porn from the 1970s-1980s, the more I find that not everything was good as some older folks with nostalgia glasses on like to boast about. Aside from the relatively worse quality of filming back then, worker protections were pretty bad. Sure, there was less incentive to have them do surgery like breast implants but there was also less incentive to verify the age (TL was one actress who caused a major scandal for one) and you better hope the director wasn't some sex pest (like Ron Jeremy). Hell, some of the sex scenes in porn from the 1970s-1980s are about as exciting as fucking a brick thanks to less knowledge of sex practices in those days.
